Last week we celebrated National Literacy Day in a big way! 📚✨ Our elementary students enjoyed extra time reading with buddies and diving into great books in their classrooms. Did you know that just 20 minutes of independent reading a day can lead to a 39% boost in reading achievement? What an amazing reminder of the power of reading!

This Patriot’s Day, students at West Holt Public Schools took time to honor and express heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated public servants—past and present—who protect and serve our community.

Many of these individuals are deeply rooted in our students’ lives as parents, grandparents, relatives, neighbors, and friends. Among those in attendance from our local volunteer Fire and Rescue Department were Boyd Mitchell, Travis Schmitz, Tori Peterson, Michael Sholes, Tasha Gentele, Jon Wolf, and Matt Ketteler.

We’re also proud of our current students—AJ Pospichal, Jamison Slaymaker, Lane Keogh, Austin Keogh (not pictured), and Alex Gotschall—who are already stepping up to serve through the Junior Cadet program.

Community service runs strong at West Holt. Volunteers include girls basketball coach Randy Bilstein, superintendent Paul Pistulka, and school board members Scott Gotschall and Kelly Jelinek (not pictured).

Their commitment and example remind us all of the importance of service, sacrifice, and community.

The kindergartners are using dice to show numeration in mathematics. Dice are a wonderful mathematical tool to use in the early learning stages, especially for teaching early number concepts and place value. Dice are a hands-on, interactive tool that makes learning numbers engaging and fun. Here you see the kindergartners in Mrs. Roemer's room using dice to play a "Gotcha"numeration game. Within this activities, students used multiple basic numeration skills, including counting, subsidizing, and the comparing of numbers one through six.
