West Holt JH Compete at Ainsworth MS Track Meet

April 04, 2022

The junior high Huskies took off to Ainsworth for their first meet last Thursday and came home with some promising marks to start the year.  Overall the girls were meet champions and the boys finished in third place.

Ainsworth does a nice job in running this JH meet and extended the entries to get as many as possible into the competition arenas.  They split the shot, discus, and long jump into 7th and 8th divisions, and then they extend the usual 3 entries to four.  This really benefited our girls who have 32 people out compared to 19 for the boys.

With the first meet, there were many jitters, especially for the ones who have never competed in a meet.  After we got going early, I thought the kids really settled in for the most part and competed very well throughout the rest of the beautiful day.  Usually, we talk about setting new PR’s, but with this being the first meet for so many, I just went and highlighted all of the NEW marks (which includes some PR’s, and some first-timers).  Overall the boys set 35 new marks and the girls set 53.   From here now we can move forward and focus on improving all of those marks and setting new PR’s.

Some highlights on the boys' side are:  Marek Dvorak in the throws, new PR’s of over 40 feet in the shot and 126 in the discus, Jamison Slaymaker with a blazing early time in the 200 hurdles, 4x100 and 4x400 victories, Ezra Sholes winning the 8th Shot.  Our boys scored 96 points with a limited squad, and I thought they competed very well, I firmly believe they will progress and get better.

Highlights on the girls' side were:  Taylor Walnofer with victories in the 100 and TJ with PR’s, Pavan Larson with victories in the PV and 400, Ava Hoffman with a strong showing in the 800 and 1600, Monica Chavez with a comeback in the 200 hurdles for victory, 4x100, 4x400 and 4x800 victories, all of the throwers, many with a PR.  We have really good depth on the girls' side and it showed at Ainsworth.  We are still going to need to find a few legs on some relays but things will shake out as the season goes along.
