Ponca 28 West Holt 24

October 24, 2022

The final regular season football game took place at Ponca, Nebraska this past Saturday and the Huskies came up short trying to get their first win of the season.  We played an overall good game but missed some opportunities on our points after touchdown that would have helped us win.  Our offense did a good job of moving the ball all night but 2 turnovers cost us. Defense was stellar we gave up one big play but the defense also created some turnovers. The offense finished with 440 yards by far its best yardage performance of the year.

The tears were flowing and heartbreak was all around but these young men have nothing to hang their heads about. We took a lot of criticism for moving up but these young men took to the challenge and hung in there with some of the best teams in the state. All season our leadership council came up with a word of the week, these words meant something to them and the team and will be for as long as I am the head coach at West Holt. These words are pride, grit, tenacity, culture, mentality, cohesive, and integrity, on our team shirts next season these words will be displayed.

I am very proud of our team by the way they fought each and every game, they grew up a lot and it’s only going to help them in the future. Our future is bright and these men will be responsible for that, we got to keep working, get bigger, faster and stronger and the rest will take care of itself.

I would like to thank Coach Nemetz, Coach Osborne, Coach Troyer, and Coach Mlady for the time and effort they put in each and every week, not only with the varsity but the youth as well. People don’t realize how much time these guys spend on a Sunday to have the best plan possible for success. It is greatly appreciated.

Finally to all our fall sports program- what a year for cross country both boys and girls, they brought home a ton of hardware and finished off at state with the boys team finishing 7th overall and the girls team finishing 11th. Maddie Davis placed 5th as an individual and that is quite the accomplishment.  Girl’s golf started slow but picked it up in the middle of their season by bringing home top 3 finishes at tournaments and near the top 5 at districts.  Volleyball a team that has come a long way and it has been a while since they played on Friday in the NVC tournament and finishing 3rd.  Sub district didn’t go our way but most definitely nothing to be ashamed off.  One common theme with all our fall sports team is youth, we were very young but lead by some tremendous seniors, and West Holt’s time is coming in all areas of our activities and sports. Good luck to our winter seasons looking forward to watching us compete.
