State Wrestling Results

Coach Schroeder

February 20, 2022

The Huskies completed the wrestling season at the State Wrestling Tournament in Omaha this last weekend.  The Huskies had two qualifiers.  Caleb Davis at 152 in the Boys' division and Maddison Davis at 132 in the Girls' division.

Caleb started the day with a loss to the eventual State Runner-Up the first day of competition.  We gave a great effort.  Caleb was wrestling right with his opponent.  The score was close as Caleb made an attempt at securing a takedown.  The attempt failed and our opponent was able to counter-ending the match in a pin.

The second day, Caleb was able to come back with a win.  Caleb dominated in the match from start to finish.  The next match would send us to the heartbreak round Friday night with a win.  In this match, we started a little slow.  Caleb gave a great effort in the third period digging into our opponent’s lead but time fell short.  This opponent would eventually place 4th in the meet.

Caleb came a long way from a year ago.  He put in the work in the off-season and it paid off with a trip to the State Tournament and a win.  Caleb is a sophomore and has two more years.  I’m sure he’ll continue putting in the work to improve his chances at bringing home a medal.

Madison Davis made West Holt history by being the first girl to medal at the State Girls Wrestling Tournament.  This is the first year the event was sanctioned by the state so she will also have the honors of being in the group of girls first to place at a sanctioned NSAA Girls State Tournament.

Maddie started her State Tournament on Thursday.  She had to wrestle three matches.  In her first match, Maddie defeated her opponent by pin.  Maddie controlled the match from start to finish.  In the second match, she wrestled well but could not come up with a win.  The opponent had a little different style than we were acclimated to and we just couldn’t overcome this obstacle.  Maddie finished the day with another pin ensuring that she would go on to Saturday in her attempt at a medal.

The second day started out great for Maddie.  She started again dominating the match and finishing it with a pin.  In the second match, it started close with the score tied at 1 to 1.  We lost a match at districts by being caught in a headlock, so the last two weeks Maddie was working on throwing and countering this move.  It paid off because our opponent gave us an opportunity to throw the headlock and Maddie took full advantage of it ending the match in a pin.

In the consolation finals, Maddie started out well.  From the neutral position, we were in control with several close attempts at finishing the takedown.  In the second period, Maddie chose the down position and scored quickly with an escape.  Maddie made another attempt at a takedown, but our opponent was able to counter ending the match in a pin.

Maddie ended up with the fourth-place medal.  Maddie did a great job competing with the best in the State.  Like Caleb, Maddie is a sophomore and has two more years.

The team would like to thank the fans for their support throughout the year.  It’s great to see fans at matches and tournaments cheering them on.
