Huskies Have Good Week

Coach Hale

January 23, 2022

The boys' basketball team went 6-0 overall between the JV and Varsity last week.  Our level of play improved as our team's health improved.

We were on the road again at Plainview on Tuesday night.  The JV opened the night with a 49-34 win.  Weston Mathis and Zach Hooey led the scoring with 20 and 15 respectively.  In the varsity game, we had another lineup change as we were still recovering from illness.  We got out to a lead by half-time but had to withstand a run by Plainview in the third quarter.  We actually lost a 9 point lead in the third quarter but came back in the fourth quarter with some good defense.  We held Plainview to 2 points in the fourth.  It was a good win from a mental toughness standpoint, being short-handed against a team that was 6-6 at the time.

We were on the road again on Thursday, to play the Boyd County Spartans at Spencer.  This time, we were close to full strength health-wise.  It was a slow start by both teams, but scoring picked up in the second quarter where we secured a lead.  The guys came out better in the third quarter than we did against Plainview.  We were really happy with the guys being on the same page and communicating on the floor.  It’s always tough to light it up against Boyd County’s defense, but we scored what we needed to and defended on the other end.

The JV got us going that night as well by winning 34-11 in three quarters.

The JV continued providing momentum on Friday as we hosted Elgin Public Pope John.  We had enough JV to play 4 quarters and score 40 in the first half and held on to a 56-43 win.

The varsity game was some of our best play so far.  EPPJ came in with a 14-1 record and had beat Plainview 86-38 the night before.  So, we had nothing to lose and everything to gain going into the game.  The guys did a good job of locking in on the scouting report and played some good defense.  Some shots fell for some of our guys that we’d been waiting on.  We started better than we had been in the first quarter and got to half with a 5 point lead.  We had our best 3rd quarter in quite some time to take a double-digit score into the fourth.  We did a good job of managing the lead to secure the win.

The 3 wins of the week moved the Huskies up a couple of spots in the NVC tournament seedings, which will start this coming Saturday.  Brackets will be published on the Website as soon as they are released.
