Holiday Basketball Played
January 02, 2022
The O’Neill Holiday Tournament sent the Husky boys JV team a gift of playing time when they invited our JV team to play in place of the North Central JV in their Holiday Tournament. So last Monday, the JV team got a rare opportunity to play a Holiday break game against the Bancroft-Rosalie-Lyons-Decator JV at O’Neill. The Husky-JV won the first 3 quarters to post a 49-31 win. Individually, Weston Mathis and Zach Hooey led the scoring with 11 apiece.

The varsity continued the Holiday basketball season when they traveled to Stanton on Tuesday and Wednesday. On day 1, the Huskies played the host team in the late game. Statistically, it was one of the better games we had played, but Stanton took advantage of the “scramble” plays that typically show up in the first game of a Holiday tournament. The Mustangs got their hands on a lot of loose balls, long rebounds, 50/50 balls and which resulted in more offensive possessions for them. We played a lot of defense and that wore on us as the game went on. In my assessment of the day 2 game with Hartington-Newcastle our loss was due to many of the same things. Statistically, we played well but needed to finish mentally and physically better in the fourth quarter.
We were competitive in both games. We spent a lot of energy against Stanton to battle back out of a hole and that may have showed up in the second half of the Hartington game. If we learn from both of these losses, we have a chance to keep getting better.
Individually, Jakeem led the team in scoring with 27 for the tournament. Tyler Jelinek led the team in rebounds with 13 and Bryce Steinkraus led the team in assists with 7.
