Boys Split with CWC and Battle Creek
December 20, 2021
The Huskies opened up the NVC regular-season schedule with CWC last Tuesday and treated the home crowd to a victory. The Renegades were short on players, so we just played 2 quarters of JV, with the Huskies taking that contest 25-14. In the varsity game, the Huskies used a balanced offensive attack to get out to an early lead. We turned up the defensive pressure a bit in the second quarter which led to some easier scoring opportunities. Everyone that suited up for the game played at least 8 minutes. Eleven players scored. Jakeem Brown, Lincoln Konrad, and Ian Larson had double digits. Zach Hooey led the team in rebounding by snagging eight. Tyler Jelinek managed the point extremely well, having no turnovers and 5 steals.

The Huskies struggled to get the offense going on Saturday at Battle Creek. The Braves put a lot of experience on the floor, with their top 7 players all being seniors. We did a good job of handling their pressure early in the game by breaking their full-court press effectively and hitting a few shots in the first quarter. We turned it over 8 times in the first quarter but were getting layups when we broke the press, so BC backed off as the game went on. The difference came down to the Braves being more effective in the areas of rebounding, getting to loose balls, and scoring in the paint. Battle Creek scored 40 of their 54 in the paint on layups, post moves, and second-chance points. We countered with 18 points in the paint. It was a good test for us, by playing a school from a bigger class and we’ll get better from it. Individually, Jakeem chipped in 16 points, Ian had a good defensive night grabbing 10 defensive rebounds and 7 deflections. I was happy with our overall efforts, the game will be a positive in the end if we keep learning and working.
The JV also gained experience. We were a bit short-handed as the injury and flu bug hit a couple of our players. We suited 7 players, but they played hard. We hung in there really well the first half but got out-scored 9-29 in the second half to lose 21-48.
