Huskies Get First Win

Coach Hale

December 06, 2021

The Husky boys' basketball team got the season started last week by traveling to Creighton to play the Bulldogs.  Each team was retooled from last season.  Both teams were 14-11 last season and both teams brought back two returning starters from those teams.  The Bulldogs had a bit of an advantage as they played Laurel Concord Coleridge the night before.  This experience was evident in the first quarter as the Huskies fell behind 7-0 before making a run to tie the game at 10-10 at the quarter break.  Early on, Creighton was a bit quicker to loose balls, rebounds, quicker cuts, etc. but as the game went on we started playing a bit faster.

The Huskies were able to build a lead in the 2nd and 3rd quarters.  Creighton played to extend the game by fouling late in the game.  We made 7 of 12 free throws down the stretch to preserve the win.

Individually, we had 7 players in the scoring column with Jakeem Brown leading the way with 19 points and 9 rebounds and took a charge.  Ian Larson showed he can rebound by collecting 9.  Tyler Jelinek did well at the point with a 2 to 1 assist to turnover ratio.  Lincoln Konrad came off the bench to block 3 shots.  Bryce Steinkraus chipped in 3 assists while we were +10 when Caeden Lech was on the floor.  Nate Wallinger and Weston Mathis played some solid defense while they were in there.  All the guys contributed to a good team effort.

The JV played just 2 quarters as the Bulldogs were short on players.  We were able to get everyone on the floor at some point.  The West Holt JV won 21-10.
