West Holt Jr. Participant in County Government Day

Mr. Nemetz

October 10, 2021

On Thursday, October 8th, 20 selected juniors attended the 67th Annual County Government Day in O’Neill.  The day was filled with really great information for the youth of our area.  We first got to hear from O’Neill police chief Matt Otte, who focused on career exploration and the ins and outs of the agencies working together in the area.  Next, we got to visit the jail and 911 office, which was a whole new experience.  The students then got to listen to Matt Dennis and the development of Handlebend, which was really interesting.  Then it was on to the district courtroom where the students heard from many of our local veterans and county leaders, including Doug Frahm on the importance of growing and coming back to Holt County.  From the district courtroom, the students were then dismissed to their respective offices to learn about a specific piece of Holt County Government.  After office time we met up at St. Mary’s for the Quiz competition, where our kids did very well and were respectable only missing a couple of questions.  After the competition, it was then on to the Annex Building for the K-9 drug dog demonstration, which the kids loved.  Thanks go out to the Legion Auxiliary for the fine lunch of walking tacos.  The national guard recruiter then gave a talk about trying to pay for college.  Then came speech time where one student from each office had to get up and give a summary of the individual office.  West Holt was very well represented as 11 of the 20 speakers were West Holt kids.  After the speeches, the day concluded, except for the extra drug dog presentation just for us.  Again maybe a highlight for most of the kids.  The overall day was filled with career exploration, information, and just getting to experience county government as a whole.
