Golf Team Returns to State

Heading into the C-3 District Tournament, the Huskies knew they would be in the mix for one of the qualifying spots for the Class C State Tournament.  There were two teams that were almost locked for the first two spots, Battle Creek and Hartington CC, but the third spot was open and we were in the group of 3-4 teams that would get that ticket to state.  Seventy players were playing for 10 individual spots at Fair Play Golf Course in Norfolk.

Our goal was to shoot 360 or better as we felt that would put us in the running and it was a number that we knew we were capable of shooting.  Our best score to date was 363 at the WH Invite.  We also knew that keeping our composure would be most important as some teams in our group contending for that 3rd spot would feel the pressure and drop out.

The weather on the first nine was a challenge.  It was wet.  Mist greeted everyone first thing in the morning and it continued through the first 10-11 holes.  We really showed good composure during that 9.  We had some bad holes, but I thought the guys competed through it.  Norfolk Catholic was a team in our group that dropped off after the first nine.  We shot 181 on the front 9, while they shot 201.  Tri-County shot 190 and Ponca shot 186.  Wisner-Pilger shot 179 fueled by a 33 by Rockney Peck.   So we put ourselves in contention behind Battle Creek and Hartington CC.  Cameron Adkisson and Jaxson Cadwallader showed some senior grit on the back nine.  They shot 37 and 41 respectively, to pace the team to a 176 on the back nine to edge Ponca. Cameron’s score of 77 placed him in a tie for 3rd.   Mason Mitchell and Nathaniel Ketteler got their game going on the front 9 to put the team in position.  Weston Mathis put in one of his best 9-hole scores of the year on the back. It was the first time all five guys had broke 100.

We were just really happy with the way each player kept competing and didn’t give up after a bad shot or bad break.  Everyone of the Husky golfers had set playing at state as a personal goal at the beginning of the year and it’s great to see them reach a goal.  They really rose to the occasion and we’ll now shoot for a great experience at the State Tournament in Kearney.
