Resiliency Key For Huskies

January 31, 2021

Last week the Huskies faced a few challenges. Going into the week, we were scheduled to play Neligh-Oakdale on Tuesday, but had to postpone the game due to weather. It was challenging for us to get psyched up for a game, then have it postponed.

We refocused to prepare for our game at O’Neill Public on Thursday. O’Neill is a great challenge for us every year as they are a bigger school and play a physical brand of basketball. The Eagles were coming off a stretch where they had won 3 or their last 4 games. They had some key players returning from injury and were starting to gel. We fell behind 0-8 before we scored. We battled back to 11-15, before O’Neill finished the quarter with a couple buckets to go ahead 11-20. The Eagles shot extremely well, 10-19 from 3 and 17-31 from two. We were a step behind the whole game, but after watching the film, we had guys hustling, we didn’t play as bad as the score indicated. We’ll just give O’Neill a congrats on playing really good basketball.

The JV’s also fell to the Junior Eagles, but kept it close.

The next challenge was to get back up and get ready for NVC tournament play. The team really showed resilience in our first round game against North Central on Saturday. The guys turned the page and believed they could play better. That mind-set resulted in the first round win over the Knights. We played a very clean game, 3 turnovers and a lot of assists. We crashed the offensive boards and turned those rebounds into points. After earning a lead, we did a good job of stretching that lead in the second half. It was maybe our best performance in terms of teamwork. Jakeem, Cameron and Aaron scored in double digits, but we also scored eleven from the other guys, plus a bunch of rebounds, and tough defense. We got out and ran better and got back to the style of play that works for us.

We will take on the #1 seeded St. Mary’s Cardinals at St. Mary’s on Monday at 6 pm.
