Huskies 2-1 in NVC so Far

Coach Hale

January 10, 2021

The Huskies played a couple of fellow NVC members last week and came away with a road win and a home loss to add to their win earlier in the season over CWC. We’ll continue the non-conference season at Crofton on Tuesday and an NVC game with North Central at home on Thursday upcoming.

Last Friday, we traveled to the Orchard gym to take on Summerland. Our focus was to get into more of a full-court game and use our speed better. We also wanted to reduce our turnover rate and be more efficient on offense. Our full-court press worked really well to start the game. We ran out to a 16 point lead, but we piled up some fouls, and felt like we should get out of the press. Summerland cut into the lead in the second quarter as we were finding our half-court game. We made a little run to go in at the half with a lead.
The second half was a chess match of us managing foul trouble and figuring out how to get some good shots while defending their driving offense. We were down by a point with 10 seconds left when Jakeem Brown hit 2 free throws to put us up one. The guys played good team defense the last 10 seconds to force a tough shot and blocked a stick back attempt.
We were able to cut down our turnovers compared to our holiday tournament and saw some consistency on offense. It was a tough game that required our guys to overcome adversity and we’re very proud of their efforts.
The JV looked really good in a 24-17 win. They hit 5 threes in the win, but really need to shoot free throws better (1-8). They continue to learn how to play defense and their offensive execution is getting better all the time.
We did a quick turnaround to play an early game against Elkhorn Valley at home on Saturday. We got home late and started the JV game around 3:30, so we were concerned with “jet-lag”. The JV started the night off with a 31-16 win. They played with good energy. They played up-tempo with good energy.
The varsity also came out with good energy, especially defensively. We forced tough shots and only gave up 6 points while having one of our best offensive execution quarters. We got good shots, just didn’t hit many. I think we fell into a bit of a trap in the second quarter. When shots don’t go down you normally make, you sometimes let up defensively and that may have happened in the second quarter.
The guys made a good adjustment at half-time and hit a couple of those good shots in the 3rd quarter to tie the game at 32. We got into foul trouble again and only hit 3 of 12 in the fourth quarter. EV just executed better at the end of the game than we did. We were really happy with our offense on the night, we worked to get each other good shots, and any other night, we would hit those and win by 10.
A couple of stat highlights, Jakeem Brown averaged 48% from the field, Joe Albrecht picked up 8 rebounds and Nate Wallinger was 100% from the line. Aaron Kraus had a double-double on Saturday, 13 points and 10 rebounds. Cameron Adkisson and Aaron had 4 and 5 steals respectively, on Friday. The bench is continuing to figure out their roles.
