Visiting Speaker at West Holt

November 20, 2020

On Thursday, November 19th and Friday, November 20th, Coach Kevin Kush presented to the students, faculty and staff at West Holt Public Schools.  On the afternoon of the 19th, the students grades 7-12 were enlightened by Coach Kush’s message about taking advantage of Doors of Opportunity.  The students heard many stories and life lessons around the importance of good decision making, hanging with people who make good decisions, the importance of goal setting, that popularity does not equate to importance or success in school, and the importance of respecting everyone.  Students gave great feedback on the presentation and Coach Kush complemented our students several times to the staff and administration about the engagement he received from our students.

On Friday morning, the staff participated in a message about effective methods to move even the most challenging students down the path to success.  Again, many funny stories were shared to remind the teachers of the importance of a positive attitude (especially in the times of COVID-19), the importance of high expectations for students and staff, the impact teachers and staff can have on young people, and the goal of recognizing the value in everyone.  Many teachers appreciated the message and felt it was great timing to help finish off the year, and to push hard to the end of the semester.

Mr. Kush has been involved in coaching and teaching for over thirty years. Coach Kush spent 21 of those years working with at-risk youth at Boys Town in Omaha Nebraska. As a head football coach, he compiled a remarkable record of 164 wins and just 58 losses with 13 of those teams finishing in the top 10. Coach Kush now speaks full time to a variety of groups including teachers, youth organizations, and companies. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in marketing and business education, and a Master of Arts degree from the University of Nebraska in vocational and adult education. In 2005 Mr. Kush was featured on ABC World News Tonight as their Person of the Week.  He is also the author of three different books: The 100 Yard Classroom; Competing with Character; and “A Piece of the Puzzle” – Eight Traits of a Quality Teammate.
