COVID-19 and Other - Update 11/10/2020

November 10, 2020

Dear West Holt Parents and Community -

I have chosen to write an article today, rather than a video.  I figured everyone was tired of hearing me!!  I have some very important information about COVID-19 and other schedule updates for our school.  If you have questions feel free to contact the office.

  • Please follow this link to a letter from myself in collaboration with our educational service unit and our local health departments (CLICK HERE). You will find recent case information as well as information about how to proceed if our risk dials continue to go up.  Everyone involved agreed that schools should stay in session as long as possible and not simply rely on the risk dial numbers for direction.  We will continue to track our cases and stay in school unless we see significant increases in cases or patterns in cases.
  • As many of you know, the Governor announced new directed health measures which will go into effect on Wednesday, November 11.  I would encourage you to investigate those DHMs.  I believe the Governor's goal is to increase the expectations of social distancing in many places including gymnasiums, and has limited capacities to 25%.  He stated explicitly that for extra curricular activities, only direct household members will be allowed to attend.  We will be following this recommendation.
  • We will also be following the other guidance which has been given to us by the NSAA in regard to activities.  We will hold to only household members being able to attend events starting this week.  That means for JH Basketball, JH Wrestling, and for the public performance for One-Acts, only household members will be allowed, and social distancing between household groups will be expected.  If you have questions, please contact the school.  Masks will be required for all attendees at all times and concessions will be limited.  We will not be allowing soup suppers this year either.
  • We will be conducting as many activities as possible in the main gym so those activities can be live streamed on our YouTube channel.  You can find the channel by searching "West Holt Husky Vision" on YouTube.  This will include as many Junior High events as we can!

Schedule Changes

The board of education recognizes the challenges that have been faced by our students and staff this year.  In an effort to keep morale high and to allow our teachers a bit more work time to better prepare for having to teach students both in person and virtually, the following schedule changes have been made.

  • November 18th was originally a late start.  This day will become a regular full day of class for students.  November 20th will be changed to an inservice day for teachers and students will not be in session.  Again, this will allow some work time and planning as we move forward in this pandemic.
  • November 25th (Wednesday before Thanksgiving) was originally a 1pm dismissal for students.  This will be a NO SCHOOL DAY.
  • The last day for students for Christmas break was originally scheduled for December 22nd.  We will now be having our last day of the semester on Friday, December 18th.  Teachers will be given a workday on Monday, December 21st.  Students will not return back to school until January 5th.  We will still have our basketball games scheduled for December 21st.

All of your student's teachers will continue to communicate these changes, but please take note of these changes and mark them on your calendar appropriately.

Thanks for all of your support throughout this school year.  We will continue to work hard to provide your children with the very best education we can here at West Holt Public Schools.
