Boys Basketball Stanton Tournament

Tough Losses at Stanton

by Coach Hale

In the first round of the Stanton Holiday tournament, we had another slow start.  Devon Dohrman came off the bench to score our first bucket four minutes into the game.  We were behind the 8-ball again early.  We were down 9 early in the second quarter, but the lesson of bouncing back from adversity was recalled from the Ord game.  We created some turnovers and hit a few shots to get the game back to a tie by half time.

The game went back and forth in the second half with the Huskies adjusting to several defensive changes made by the Mustangs.  Our posts combined for 19 points in the second half to balance the 10 points thrown in by our guards.

With the score tied at 48 with time running down, we turned it over, but we did a good job of creating a tough shot for Stanton, which missed.  Into overtime we went.  Stanton gained a 3 point lead going into the last minute.  We came down and hit a deep 3 with under 10 seconds on the clock to tie the game at 55.  Stanton had just enough time to get the ball down court and hit a deep 3 to win the game.  Stanton moves to 7-1 on the season and will meet O’Neill (5-1) in the championship.  We moved on to play Madison in the consolation game.

We got off the bus Tuesday and had another slow start.  It was a challenge to play the late game the night before and lose in that fashion, then get “up” for a consolation game in the middle of the day.  But, that is what it is and if you’re there then be there.

The fight showed up from the Huskies in the second quarter to take a slim lead into half time.  We just couldn’t make a run of any size in the second half to take control.  Madison hit a stick back bucket at the buzzer to take the victory.

The Huskies will enter January with a record of 4-5.  We will view it as a fresh start as we enter a month that includes the NVC tournament.
