Breakfast and Lunch Available for all Children in the Community

Dear Community Members:

I am pleased to announce that West Holt Public Schools has qualified for a food service program that allows children in our community to eat for free during this time of school closure due to COVID-19.

The program is normally known as the summer lunch program.  Usually, West Holt does not qualify for this program, but because of the federal lunch program forgiving some guidelines, we are able to participate.

OUR FIRST DAY OF MEALS FOR CHILDREN WILL BE FRIDAY, MARCH 20TH!

How will this work and what does it mean?

  • Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, until school resumes, we will provide breakfast and lunch to children free of charge.  Those wishing to participate will need to come to the east entrance by the cafeteria (Door D) and a kitchen or school staff member will be there to assist you.  Please arrive between the hours of 11am and 12:30pm.

  • A breakfast and lunch will be provided for all children in your home from age 1-18 if that is what you wish.  You will be asked to provide the names of children who will be receiving the meals and a staff member will keep a list.

  • On Monday and Wednesday, participants will receive a breakfast and lunch for that day, as well as a breakfast and lunch for the following day.  On Friday, participants will only receive breakfast and lunch for that day.  The meals will be separated out and may include instructions for preparing/heating the meal if needed.

  • There is no need to contact the school or to "put an order in".  You will simply need to come to school.

  • This program is available to all children, not just those who qualify with free or reduced status.  All children should feel free to participate.

  • If there are children who will be at home with no source of transportation who may need meals delivered, please contact the school and we will make arrangements to have food delivered in some fashion to a location.

  • There is no charge for the meals.  This is part of the federal lunch program and the school will be reimbursed for all meals.  The cost is not being absorbed by the school district, but is part of a federal program.

  • During this time, please continue to practice social distancing.  Remain 6-10 feet from others and patiently wait your turn.  That may mean remaining in your vehicle until the appropriate time to receive your meals.

  • No one will be allowed to remain at the school to eat or loiter.  You will be expected to leave promptly after you have been given the to-go meals.

This is a great opportunity for our children to receive proper nutrition during this time of school closure.  At West Holt we know that this closure, and the entire COVID-19 situation, has added burdens on every family.  I hope this is a way we can assist in lessening the burden.

If you have questions, please contact the main office during regular business hours.

Sincerely,

Paul Pistulka

Superintendent
