Golfers Win Highway 20 Invite

Coach Hale

May 06, 2019

The Huskies competed in three events the past week. On Thursday, the varsity went to the Wayne Invite while the JV competed in the Battle Creek Invite.
At Wayne we competed against a good field and a course with some challenges that we don’t typically see around here. So, it is always a good experience for us to play in that tournament. The team placed in the middle of the pack with Garrison Hansen leading the team scoring. Garrison shot 84 which was good enough for 9th place. Jaxson Cadwallader shot 93 for 29th place, Austin Wenner 94 for 32nd, Max Roberts 97 for 41st and Jaegher Ogden 98 for 45th in the field of 72. Austin and Garrison had played there last year and the others hadn’t, so it was a good learning experience.

Another learning experience happened Thursday as the WH junior varsity participated in the Battle Creek Invite. This was their first tournament away from home this year, so they were understandably nervous. The only way you learn course management is to play new courses, so we hope that got better.

The best individual result was posted by Joseph Seger with a 106. He played the back nine 6 strokes better than the front, which shows growth. Luke Olson and Nathaniel Ketteler also got better on the back nine to place 39th and 47th, respectively. Grant Mlinary and Jackson Butterfield came in 45th and 49th out of the field of 55 golfers. The junior Huskies finished 9th in the team results. Creighton, one of the teams in our district placed 3rd with a 356 and Battle Creek won easily. Battle Creek has a chance to make some noise at the Class C State tournament.

The Varsity kicked off this week with a win at the Highway 20 Invite at Bassett Country Club on Monday. We did a better of job of getting approach shots closer to the greens and giving ourselves more chances at par. We still haven’t got everyone playing well at the same time, but we are seeing a bit more consistency out of some of the players. The team shot our lowest score of the year and scored better on the back nine than the front nine which is one of the problems we had earlier this year.

Individually, Garrison Hansen took the gold medal with his 78. His short game and putter were really solid in the cool conditions and bumpy, slow greens. His team-mates also brought home some hardware. Austin was 10th, Max 11th and Jaxson 14th out of the field of 53.
