Huskies End Season 17-8

February 25, 2019

Huskies End Season 17-8

West Holt opened post-season play against Niobrara/Verdigre at Creighton on Tuesday night.  This match-up was the third time that the two teams had faced off in just over three weeks, and the resulting familiarity between two talented teams made for a close, four-quarter game.  A low-scoring first quarter saw us take an 11-6 lead, and an even second quarter resulted in a 21-16 Husky lead.  By the end of the third quarter, we had stretched the lead to 10 at 30-20, but the Cougars heated up offensively in the fourth quarter to outscore us 22-16 and made us work hard to hold on for the 46-42 win.  Throughout the game, N/V tried to pack the middle, slow down our inside game, and make us rely more on our perimeter shooting in the half court.  In response, our shooters hit 39% from behind the arc and made timely shots to preserve the victory.

Tuesday's win earned us a rematch with Boyd County for the sub-district championship, and like our double overtime game over the Spartans a few weeks earlier, this one was close and kept everyone on the edge of their seats until the final buzzer.  After one quarter of play, we led 11-6, and at halftime, we maintained a slim 21-19 advantage.  BC gained the edge in the third quarter, outscoring us 14-7 and taking a 33-28 lead into the final frame. And while we made a push in the fourth quarter and had a couple chances to tie the game in the final minute, we couldn't get shots to fall, and the Spartans held on for the 38-35 win and advance to the district final.  It was a hard-fought game and a tough way to end the season, but we never gave up, left everything on the floor, and should be proud of the way we competed.
