JV End Week 5-0, Win Rangeland 9/10 Championship

Coach Ludwig

February 11, 2019

At O'Neill on Monday night, the Husky JV put together one of their most complete games of the season and by playing with intensity on both ends of the floor for a solid four quarters, earned themselves a 60-41 victory over the Eagles.  Offensively, three Huskies scored in double figures, with seven players getting into the scoring column, and five players handed out 16 assists.  On defense, five Huskies combined for 12 steals, and we forced the Eagles into 14 turnovers.

On Tuesday night, the Huskies jumped out to a 14-1 lead over Niobrara/Verdigre at Niobrara, but struggled to match the game-long intensity of Monday night's game and scored only 13 points in the final three quarters to win 27-6.  One highlight for this game included 5/6 shooting from the free throw line for 83%.

Thursday night, the Huskies faced St. Mary's on the road and came from behind in the second half to pull off the 53-49 win.  In the opening quarter, the Cardinals jumped out 15-8, but we kept using an inside-outside scoring combination to cut the lead to four at halftime (26-22).  After a big third quarter, took the lead 43-40 and held on for the W in a tightly contested final frame.  Again, the Huskies had balanced scoring, with four players in double figures and a total of six chipping in points.  We also did a better job of using our defense to generate offense, coming away with 11 steals and forcing 12 St. Mary's turnovers to create scoring opportunities in transition.

A pair of close wins at home earned the Huskies the 9/10 Rangeland Tournament championship on Saturday morning.  In our opening game, we used a balanced scoring attack to take a 22-13 lead against North Central in the first quarter, and even though the Knights outscored us 34-31 in the following three quarters, that explosive start proved to be the difference in an eventual 53-47 Husky victory.

In the championship game, we faced O'Neill for the second time this week and the third time this season.  The first quarter was played close, and we held a slim 10-7 lead going into the second.  But the Eagles quickly erased that lead and outscored us by 10 (17-7) to take a 24-7 lead at halftime.  In the third quarter, we refocused our defensive effort to hold O'Neill to four points and retake the lead 29-28.  While the fourth quarter was tightly contested, we hit a couple timely 3's to maintain our advantage and hold on for the 39-36 win.
