Husky Varsity Wins Two

Coach Ludwig

February 11, 2019

On Tuesday, the Huskies traveled to Niobrara to face the Cougars in a rematch of the previous week's 2nd round tournament contest.  Like that one had, this game started close, with WH leading 18-12 after one, but in the second quarter we picked up the defensive intensity, got some steals, and got our transition offense going.  By outscoring N/V 19-9 in the second, we built a 37-21 lead at halftime.  And we kept up the defensive pressure in the second half, ending the game with eight steals and forcing 15 Cougar turnovers.  We also hit the boards hard, outrebounding N/V 37-27.  Offensively, we had good balance, with four players in double figures and a total of nine Huskies scoring.  In addition, eight players combined for 20 assts.  One final highlight was our free throw shooting.  From the line we hit 13 of 15 attempts for 87%, one of our best performances of the year.

The Huskies used hot shooting from inside and outside to jump out to a 33-20 first half lead over St. Mary's on Thursday night and eventually earned a 56-38 win.  In that first half, we shot over 70% from both 2-pt. and 3-pt. territory, missing only 5 shots in the opening 16 minutes.  While our 3-pt. shooting cooled down a bit in the second half, we continued to hit well from inside the arc, with our 2-pt. field goal percentage at 75% for the game.  We also shot 5/6 from the charity stripe for 83%.  On the night, three Huskies scored in double figures, while eight total players chipped in points.  On defense, we did a good job forcing St. Mary's into tough shots, holding them to a 34% shooting percentage, and we kept them off the offensive boards as well, limiting their second shot opportunities.  Next up for the Huskies will be their final game of the regular season at Ewing on Friday, February 15.  D1-6 sub-district play will begin the following Monday at Creighton. Seedings for those games are yet to be determined.
