West Holt Takes 3rd in NVC Tournament

Coach Ludwig

February 04, 2019

The Huskies opened up Niobrara Valley Tournament Conference play hosting Niobrara-Verdigre in the quarter-final round on Monday night.  The first quarter was played close, and the teams went into the second tied 12-12.  Then, by using an effective inside-outside scoring attack and turning up the defensive intensity, we outscored the Cougars 18-6 to take a 30-18 lead at the half.  In the second half, we kept looking to score in the paint, with our guards doing a good job finding our posts for high percentage shots.  On the night, eight Huskies combined for 18 assists, and the team converted on 58% of its two-point shot attempts.  And even though N/V knocked down a handful of threes in the second half, by the end of the third quarter we had stretched our lead to 15 at 46-31, and we eventually came away with the 62-42 win.

The semi-final round on Thursday pitted the Huskies against Clearwater/Orchard in a rematch of an early January nail-biter that ended in a 59-56 West Holt victory.  Like that game, this one was tight from the opening tip to the final buzzer: however, the Huskies came up short this time, 56-51, in overtime.  In the first quarter, we came out hot from behind the arc and hit some early threes to take the lead, but the Cyclones battled back to tie it at 12-12 at the end of one, and in the second quarter they outscored us 13-6 to take a 25-18 lead at halftime.  By the end of the third we had cut that gap to three at 32-29, and a great defensive effort and timely shooting in the fourth put us in position to tie things up as the clock wound down.  With .8 seconds left, we hit a deep three to knot the score at 38-38 and force the game into overtime.  In the extra frame, O/C outscored us 13-8 to secure the win and send us to the consolation game on Saturday.

In the consolation game, we had another rematch, this time against North Central who had defeated the us 42-40 back on January 10.  Similar to that first contest, this one was low-scoring which intensified the value of every possession and ball security.  Tough defense and good shooting helped us jump out to a 12-1 lead to start the game, but NC kept chipping away, and by the end of the first quarter they had cut the lead to 12-9.  In the second quarter, we got into a bit of foul trouble, but we held a slight 10-8 lead and went into the locker room up five, 22-17.  After the half, the Knights came out aggressively and outscored us 14-13 to cut the lead to four going into the final frame.  For the first half of the fourth quarter, both teams matched each other basket for basket, but NC made a run with around four minutes left to take the lead by one.  In the closing minutes, a couple timely shots and defensive stops allowed us to regain the lead and hold on for the 44-39 win.  After a long week of basketball against three quality opponents, it was a good win and gave us some confidence going into the final weeks of our season.  All three teams that we played in the tournament will be in our sub-district that starts on February 18, so there will be more rematches to come.
