Huskies Drop 2

January 29, 2019

The Neligh-Oakdale Warriors came to town on Tuesday and opened the game with an offensive flurry that put them up 21-10 after the first quarter.  And while we battled hard and outscored them 46-42 for the rest of the game, we couldn't overcome that initial deficit and came up short 55-43 at the final buzzer. Positives for this game include balanced team scoring with four players in double figures, outrebounding the Warriors 25-22, and having a better overall field goal percentage (WH-49%, N-O-45%).  However, we shot only 4/15 from three-point for 27% and 6/14 from the free line for 43%, so we left some points on the board that could have helped as we mounted our comeback.  As we move closer to the post-season, these are two areas that we will work to improve upon.

The Huskies faced O'Neill in their first road game in over two weeks on Thursday night.  While the first quarter was played even at 14-14, we outscored the Eagles 15-9 in the second quarter to go up 29-23 going into the locker room at halftime.  Momentum shifted in the second half, as the Eagles heated up from behind the arc to take the lead 44-36 at the end of the third quarter, and that hot three-point shooting continued into the fourth quarter, with the Eagles continuing to hit timely shots that prevented us from getting over the hump as we attempted to cut into their lead.  Statistically, the game was close in several categories such as rebounding (WH-20, O'Neill-20), field goal percentage, (WH-50%, O'Neill-50%), and assists (WH-15, O'Neill-12), but again, the differences in three-point shooting and free throws were deciding factors in the game.  For the night, the Eagles hit 55% of their trey attempts compared to our 29%, and they converted on 13 more free throw attempts.  Our Niobrara Valley Conference tournament play starts Monday night at home, and we look to get back on the winning track against Niobrara-Verdigre and make a run to championship Saturday.
