Huskies Improve to 11-4

January 20, 2019

The Huskies hosted Plainview on Tuesday and earned a 55-43 win.  After falling behind 15-9 in the first quarter, we regained our composure and outscored the Pirates 19-2 in the second to take a 28-17 lead at halftime.  And that big quarter proved to be the difference in the game, as the second half was played relatively even, with the Huskies winning by a final score of 55-43. Overall, playing good defense and working hard on the boards were the keys in this game.  By closing out effectively and shutting off the Pirates' middle drive, we were able to limit the number of good looks they had at the basket, resulting in a 33% shooting percentage.  We also outrebounded our opponent 33-21, with 23 of those rebounds on defense, which limited their second shot opportunities.

On Thursday, an experienced and quality Boyd County team came to town, and it took two overtimes for the Huskies to finally secure a 47-42 win.  Both teams started the game playing tight defense, which resulted in a low-scoring first quarter that ended with the Huskies up 7-6.  The shut-down defense continued into the second quarter and scoring remained at a premium although BC was able to outscore us by three, and we went into halftime trailing the Spartans 17-15.  In the third quarter, BC capitalized on some uncharacteristic Husky turnovers to stretch their lead to five (31-26), but in the final period, we used a full court press to force some Spartan turnovers, overcome the deficit, and tie things up at the end of regulation.  Neither team scored in the first overtime, but in the second extra period, we scored an early basket to swing momentum in our favor, and we made some big free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.  In the end, this was a great team win, with three Huskies scoring in double figures and a total of seven players chipping in points and pulling down rebounds. In addition, six players dished out 12 assists, finding teammates for high percentage shots.  Next week will again be busy for us with a good Neligh/Oakdale team at home on Tuesday, O'Neill on the road on Thursday, and the Niobrara Valley Conference tournament starting on Saturday.
