Varsity Basketball Wins 2

Coach Ludwig

January 07, 2019

The Huskies got back into the win column after a pair of nail-biting victories against Clearwater/Orchard and Elkhorn Valley over the weekend.  First up was a road game against a very good O/C team in Orchard on Friday night.  From the opening tip, this one was close, with the lead switching back and forth several times and neither team being able to gain much separation.  After one quarter of play, the Cyclones led 13-11, but at halftime things were all knotted up at 24.  In the third quarter, we made some key defensive stops and made a run on offense to go up by three, 42-39.  We were able to stretch that lead to seven points in the fourth quarter, but O/C made some big plays of their own to close that gap and tie the game at 50 with just a few minutes left.  In the final minutes, free throw shooting, rebounding and ball security helped us hold on for the 59-56 win.  Coming off of a disappointing holiday tournament, this was a big game for us.  We showed up ready to play, and that focused energy and intensity earned us a strong, team win against a quality opponent.

On Saturday, Elkhorn Valley came to town and gave us everything we wanted in a 44-43 victory that ended with a Husky defensive stop and Falcon missed shot in the final seconds.  We started the game strong, clamping down on defense and finding good shots on offense, leading 15-11 after one quarter of play.  But in the second quarter we let off the gas a little bit and let EV keep things close, as we maintained a 25-19 advantage at halftime.  By the end of the third quarter, we had stretched the lead to nine at 35-26, but a furious Falcon rally in the fourth quarter, combined with our inability to convert at the free throw line, cut the lead to one and gave EV a chance for the win on the game's final possession. However, tight team defense prevented the Falcons from getting a good look at the basket, and we were able to hold on for the win.

Even though these games were different in tone and tempo, we found a way to be successful in and learn from each of them.  As we get deeper into conference play and our season, these lessons will help us develop more completely as a team.
