Boys Varsity Earn a Victory

Coach Ludwig

December 03, 2018

West Holt opened 2018-19 by hosting Creighton on Friday, and the team had a new look for the new season as five new starters took the floor replacing the top five from a senior-laden team from last year.  Even though we had played a jamboree game against St. Mary's on Tuesday, there were still a few nerves as we tipped this one off, and the first quarter saw the Huskies trying to adjust to their new roles and get into a comfortable flow of the game.  Creighton shot well in the first quarter and built a 16-8 lead going into the second, but we maintained our composure, tightened up our defense, and in turn got more aggressive on offense

to outscore the Bulldogs 19-9 and take a 27-25 lead at halftime.  After both teams refocused at halftime, the third quarter was played tightly, and the Huskies maintained a slim 41-37 edge going into the final frame.  Some key free throws in the fourth quarter helped West Holt create some separation and earn a 55-45 victory.

Going in to this game, we felt that rebounding against the physical Bulldogs was one of the keys to success, and for the night, we did a nice job on the boards, out-rebounding Creighton 28-26.  By pulling down 12 offensive rebounds, we were able to extend possessions and create second shot opportunities for ourselves, and by allowing the Bulldogs only 6 offensive rebounds, we held them to just one shot on several possessions.  In addition, we took care of the basketball well, committing only 8 turnovers, which helped us sustain scoring opportunities and limit Creighton's ability to score in transition.

Next week the Huskies will host Ainsworth on Friday night and travel to Burwell on Saturday night. We look for continued improvement against these two quality opponents.
