Huskies Improve to 19-2

February 12, 2018

West Holt picked up a trio of wins this week, starting with a 73-40 defeat of Niobrara/Verdigre at home on Tuesday.  This one started out close, with the Huskies holding a narrow 16-13 lead after one quarter.  However, momentum shifted in our favor in the second quarter as we turned up the defensive intensity and made it difficult for the Cougars to find good looks at the basket, while on offense we used an inside-outside offensive attack to outscore NV 20-3 and build a 36-16 lead at half-time.  In the second half, we continued working hard to prevent the high-powered Cougar offense from getting into a rhythm, making them take tough shots and holding them to 24 points.  We also maintained good offensive balance in the second half, getting 10 different Huskies involved in the scoring in both our transition and half-court game.  One additional highlight for the night was our 92.3% (12/13) free throw shooting, which was one of our best of the season so far.

On Thursday, the Huskies hosted St. Mary's and were again involved in a closely played first quarter.  After one, we led 12-11, but much like the NV game, we got things going defensively in the second quarter, sparking our offense and resulting in a 38-13 half-time lead.  In the second half, we kept the pressure on the Cardinals, employing a five in-five out subbing system to keep legs fresh and get a lot of Huskies on the floor making positive contributions to the 75-20 win.  Defensively we forced the St. Mary's into 20 turnovers and held them the 27% field goal shooting, while committing only four turnovers ourselves and hitting 52% of our shots.  As a team, we also rebounded well on the night, pulling down 36 boards: 18 on offense and 18 on defense.

On Saturday, we headed to Neligh to take on the N-O Warriors in a game that had been rescheduled from January 23 due to weather.  In the opening frame, we held N-O to five points and led by 10 (15-5) after eight minutes of play.  Once again, we used the five in-five out subbing system to keep pressure on the opponent with fresh legs and by switching from man to zone defense.  In the second quarter, both teams were more efficient on offense and spread the scoring, but we were able to extend our lead to 36-21 at the half.  After half-time, we continued with our game plan, building a 52-31 lead after three and eventually pulling away for the 68-42 win.  Keeping N-O off the offensive boards was one of our goals for this game, and by communicating clearly on defense and focusing on our box outs, we were able to meet that goal, limiting the Warriors' second shot opportunities, and triggering our transition offense.
