Huskies Win NVC

February 08, 2018

After earning a first-round bye, West Holt opened up Niobrara Valley Conference tournament play against Neligh-Oakdale in the quarter-finals at home on Tuesday.  To start the game, we wanted to pressure the ball and push the tempo, and our defense responded, forcing multiple Warrior turnovers, which we were able to convert in transition, and holding N/O to six points in the first quarter.  In the second quarter, the defense again held the Warriors to single digits, and four different Huskies hit 3's to help extend the lead to 38-15 at halftime.  After the half, we continued to work our inside-outside game for good shots and to pressure the ball to prevent N-O from getting into an offensive rhythm of their own, ending the contest with a 66-32 victory.

For the semi-finals, the Huskies traveled to Neligh to take on CWC in an early Thursday afternoon game.  Once again, we used aggressive defense to set the tone, and after one quarter we led the Renegades 19-12.  In the second quarter, we worked on improving our close outs to force the Renegades into taking tougher shots, and we attacked the defensive glass to limit their shot opportunities and ignite our transition game.  This helped us build a 42-23 lead at halftime, and by maintaining our defensive intensity in the third quarter, we held CWC to 10 points and created opportunities for ourselves to score on the run and go up 58-33 after three. In the final frame, several Huskies came off the bench, keeping up the momentum and making positive contributions in the 78-46 win.  On the night, 12 different Huskies chipped in points, while 6 players combined for 22 assists.  In addition to sharing the ball and getting multiple players involved in scoring, we also rebounded well against CWC, outboarding the Renegades 36-20, with 28 caroms coming on the defensive end of the floor.  Getting into our transition offense early on also helped us find good shots, which resulted in an 81% conversion of 2-point field goals.

The win against CWC earned West Holt a berth in the championship game Saturday night against Boyd County.  Following the lead of the Lady Huskies who had defeated North Central to claim the girls NVC title, we hoped put together 32 solid minutes to garner a title ourselves.  Going into game, which was a rematch of a January 18 Husky victory at Spencer, we knew that BC would have a good game plan in place, and we would need to be patient, play our game, and focus on our strengths to be successful.  In the opening minutes, the Spartans shot the ball well and led 17-13 after one, and in the second quarter, the scoring went back and forth until the last minute when we put five unanswered points on the board to go up 32-27 at halftime.  To start the second half, BC went on a mini run to keep things close, but we remained mentally tough and withstood that charge, eventually extending the lead to eight points (49-41) after three quarters of play.  In the fourth quarter, we turned it up on defense, holding the Spartans to five points, and scoring 19 of our own to win 68-46.  One of the keys to this game was the scoring balance and distribution, with four different Huskies put up double figures, which in part resulted from good inside-outside passing and making the extra pass to find good shots.  Also important was our composure against a quality team.  As Coach Hale said in his Norfolk Daily News interview, “A lot of it is confidence to go out in the third quarter and just keep playing — trust in the process, trust in their training. A lot of our games have been second-half games where we've needed to finish, and we did.”
