Huskies Win at Plainview and Boyd County

by Coach Ludwig

January 22, 2018

In the first of two road games last week, the Huskies traveled to Plainview for a physical and competitive match-up against the Pirates.  In the first half, our opponent did a good job keeping us off the boards, limiting us to one shot on several offensive possessions and putting pressure on our defense with multiple shot opportunities on their end.  At the end of the first quarter, the score was knotted at 15-15, and after a tight second quarter, we held a narrow 26-25 lead at half-time.  After the break, we started crashing the boards more effectively and gained momentum on both sides of the ball to outscore Plainview 21-5 in the third quarter and eventually hold on for a 61-42 win.  Winning the turnover battle and free throw shooting were also important in this game.  On the night, we took care of the ball well, limiting our giveaways to 5 while forcing the Pirates into 16 and creating fast break scoring opportunities for ourselves.  From the free throw line, we shot 18-20 (90%), which is our best effort so far this year.

Thursday's game at Boyd County started off at a slow pace, and in the first half, we spent a lot of time on defense as they methodically ran their half-court offense looking for good shots and ran time off the clock.  As a result, it was a low scoring half that saw us going into the locker room up 19-13.  To pick up the tempo the game, we started the second half with a full-court press, which forced the Spartans into a few turnovers and allowed us the get some scoring in transition.  As a result of extending the defense and speeding things up, we were able to outscore BC 37-13 in the second half and earn a 56-26 win.  Next week we start with a Tuesday game at Neligh-Oakdale and follow with a home game versus O'Neill. On Saturday, NVC tournament play will begin with the Huskies having a first round bye and hosting a second round game on Tuesday.
