Husky Boys Varsity Win 2

by Coach Ludwig

January 15, 2018

On Tuesday night, the Crofton Warriors came to town, and the Huskies used solid defense, good rebounding, and high percentage shooting from inside the paint to earn a 73-38 win.  Defensively, we played hard, pressuring the ball and closing down passing lanes to force Crofton into committing 20 turnovers. Good team hustle also resulted in 12 steals and several loose ball recoveries.  In addition, with a continued focus on controlling the boards, we outrebounded the Warriors 38 to 22, pulling down 12 on offensive to extend possessions and get extra shots, and grabbing 26 on the defensive end to limit their second chance scoring.  Finally, we did a nice job finishing around the basket throughout the game, which opened up some three-point looks for our shooters, especially in the second half.

Like the weather outside, our offense was cold to start things off against North Central at Springview on Thursday night in a tough conference match-up.  In the first quarter, we could muster only two made baskets and trailed 10-5 after eight minutes of play.  In the second quarter, the offense heated up a bit, and five different Huskies chipped in 13 points to take the lead and go into half-time up 18-17.  After the half, a combination of three three-pointers and some strong finishes at the rim led to a big third quarter in which we outscored the Knights 21-14 and built a 39-31 lead.  By outpacing NC 13-7 in the fourth quarter, we were able to escape with a 52-38 win against the experienced and athletic Knights squad.  Hard-fought games like this one will benefit us in the long run, and with some big regular season match-ups in the next few weeks and the Niobrara Valley Conference Tournament at the end of the month, we can use what we learned about ourselves to keep getting better.  Next week will be another busy one for the Huskies with games at Plainview on Tuesday and Boyd County (in Spencer) on Thursday.
