Varsity Boys Improve to 9-1

by Coach Ludwig

January 13, 2018

The Huskies opened 2018 with a home win against Clearwater/Orchard on Friday night.  With a long, physical Cyclone team coming to town, point of emphasis during practice last week was boxing out, and that focus paid off as we outrebounded OC 31-17, limiting their second shot opportunities and creating scoring additional opportunities for ourselves.  Capitalizing on those put-backs and finishing with contact were key in this game that was close for all four quarters.  To open the game, we got off to a slow start offensively, and trailed OC 12-7 after the first quarter. In the second quarter, we hit some big threes to get things going, and by half-time we had overcome that deficit and tied the game at 22-22.  In the second half, we hit a couple more threes and continued attacking the rim and crashing the boards to build a 36-31 lead at the end of three and eventually pull away with the 56-43 victory.

Against Elkhorn Valley on Saturday night, our defense got us going and our offense caught fire to build a 30-2 lead after the first quarter at Tilden.  Using a five in-five out subbing system, we were able to get a lot of Huskies on the floor making positive contributions.  In the second quarter, the Falcons heated up and put 17 on the board, but we were able to take a 50-19 lead into halftime and refocus our defensive effort to start the second half.  As a result, were able to hold EV to 16 second half points and earn a 76-35 win.  For the night, our defense picked off 15 steals, and overall forced 18 Falcon turnovers.  We also had another good night on the boards, outrebounding EV 22-14.  Since most of the upcoming teams on our schedule will be tall and athletic, rebounding will be important.  Offensively, 12 Huskies got into the scoring column and 7 players contributed a total of 16 assists. Anytime you can spread out the scoring, it makes you tougher to defend.
