Boys Varsity Moves to 5-0

by Coach Ludwig

December 18, 2017

As the JV had done earlier in the evening against CWC on Tuesday, the varsity Huskies used their defense to set the tone for the game, get off to a quick start, and build an early lead against the Renegades in a 74-43 home win.  Throughout the game, we played solid team defense, showing improvement in our close-outs, preventing middle drive, limiting shot opportunities, and forcing 21 turnovers.  In addition, nine different Huskies recorded steals, with a team total of 18.  We also showed balance on offense, with four different players putting up double figures and 10 players getting into the scoring column.  At the same time, our 12 assists were dished out by eight different Huskies.  We also hit the boards hard against the Renegades, allowing only four offensive rebounds and outrebounding them 30-21, overall.  And even though we got to the free throw line 17 times, we converted only nine of them for 53%, so in upcoming games, we would like to get back on track shooting 70% or better from the charity stripe.

At Battle Creek on Saturday, the Huskies got down 8-0 early, but used their defense to close the gap at 14-12 after one, and for the rest of the game, they used defensive energy to fuel the offense and pull away with a 70-46 victory.  While we didn't record as many steals as we had against CWC, only 9 against the Braves, our perimeter defense played them tight and prevented many good, clean looks at the basket, especially in the second half.  For the game, we allowed only 37 shot attempts while putting up 55 of our own.  Offensively, we attacked the basket to find high percentage shots in the paint, and this helped open things up for our perimeter shooters as the game wore on.  Again, four different Huskies scored in double figures, and five players handed out assists to their teammates.  In addition, we had great bench play in this game.  Every Husky that stepped on the floor, played hard and contributed to the team win.  Next up for the Huskies will be Ord at home on Tuesday and Valentine on the road on Thursday.
