Huskies Move to 3-0

by Coach Ludwig

December 11, 2017

In their second game of the season, the Huskies traveled to Ainsworth on Friday night for a physical match-up against the Bulldogs.  By the end of the first quarter, we had built a seven point lead (14-7), and the rest of the game saw us battling to keep Ainsworth at bay and create some scoring separation.  In the second quarter, the Bulldogs closed the gap by two, and we went into halftime up 26-21.  After making some adjustments at the half, we outscored Ainsworth 20-16 and led 46-37 going into the final frame.  In the fourth quarter, we were able to take advantage of Ainsworth's foul trouble, and we converted 15 of 20 free throw attempts to seal the 66-55 win.  For the game, we shot 21/32 from the charity stripe, so again we met our goal of getting to the line more, but fell just short of our 70% conversion goal.  This was a hard-fought game against a quality opponent, and what we learned from it will make us better as the season progresses.

On Saturday night, the Huskies hosted Burwell and came away with a 92-62 win.  Against the Longhorns, we got off to a quick start offensively and used a good balance of half-court sets and our transition game to build a 22-13 lead at the end of one quarter of play.  We stayed patient in the second quarter, making the extra pass to find good shots in the half court and scoring on the fast break when opportunities presented themselves, resulting in a 40-27 Husky lead at halftime.  To start the second half, Burwell hung tough, but we were able to stretch the lead just a bit, going into the fourth quarter up 16 points, 63-47.  In the fourth, we had our highest scoring quarter of the season, putting 29 on the board, while holding the Longhorns to 15, to record the 92-62 victory.  Patience on offense and better shot selection also resulted in our best field goal shooting percentage so far this season.  From 2 pt. range we shot 72%, while we shot 50% from behind the arc.  Good offensive rebounding also led to several put-backs for points.  These factors led to four different Huskies scoring in double figures for the night and nine players getting into the scoring column.  In addition, we once again met our season goal for free throws, going 13/18 from the line for 72%.  The Huskies will have two games upcoming this week: CWC at home on Tuesday and Battle Creek on the road on Saturday.
