Model Bridge Building

West Holt Model Bridge Contest Held

by Todd Hale

West Holt held its annual Model Bridge Building Contest on Friday, Feb 13th.  The contest consists of building a bridge from basswood and any commonly available glue.  The bridge had to weigh less than 25 grams and span a length of 30 cm.  This year the bridge had some new design elements as well.  A block 6cm x 16cm had to pass under the bridge and the roadway had to be between 6 and 8cm above the testing platform.  It was a challenge to comply with the specifications this year.

There were 7 bridges tested with the top 3 gaining entry in the State Contest held in Aurora on February 27th.  The load of the bridge was tested then an efficiency ratio of load to bridge mass was calculated.  The best bridges were the ones that are light and strong.

Amber Frost built the tope bridge.  It broke under 35 lb of pressure and had a mass of 19.4 grams for an efficiency of 819.  Kyle Linders placed second with an efficiency of 452 with Mason Hale edging Brandon Jelinek, 399-383.  Jessie Mohnsen, Kassidy Jelinek and Tony Meyer also had excellent bridge entries.
